THE NEVER-ENDING CYCLE OF SLEEP, AWAKENING, AND SLEEP AGAIN

Project for First Year, Design Fundamentals Final Project

Year: 2022

Location:  National Institute of Fashion Technology, Hyderabad

Tools: Da Vinci Resolve

Project completed under the guidance of Prof. Ramakrishna, Department of Knitwear Design

Project Overview:

The never-ending cycle of sleep, awakening and sleep again is a contemplative short film which questions the human existence and the reality of nature from the eyes of a third person narrator who finds themselves in a dream like state of reality where the monotony of life seems to make things seem fictitious and they wonder if they are ever truly awake. The narrator makes the observation of finding themselves play the protagonist in a great cinematic film which refers to their life (and the more they get into playing the protagonist of their film the more they lose their direction.)

The film contains blank shots of 12 secs have been added to make the viewer feel as if they’re watching the scene from their own eyes and every blank shot is the blink of an eye.

The first half of the film consists of a mixture visuals that the narrator sees in their everyday life. The second half shows the narrator playing the protagonist in their own movie which he believes is being watched by an audience.

Process:

The project brief revolved around incorporating the elements and principles of design through any creative medium. The medium choose in this particular project was film. The film process started with researching about film theory, then moved to scripting and storyboarding. The first half of the story comprises of memories, which were everyday shots of home and places I visited in the beginning of the new semester. The second half of the film was shot with Gauri Rathi as the protagonist in the Hi-Tech city area around campus. The shots were later compiled and edited on Da Vinci Resolve.
